Violinist practicing the violin

Did you ever feel like this? -> funny reel

You had a lot to do lately, the violin sits still in its corner of the room, you feel guilty. So after a while, you finally decide to play something, for the sake of the ‘old times’, but holy moly, it feels like you play it for the first time!! And it’s been just a few days since you practiced!!! You ask yourself, ‘What should I do?’

The answer is simple. You should not feel guilty or bad, this happens to everybody, even to the biggest violin players! What we tell our students when they come back from vacation or have just had a busy week are this easy violin practice exercises:

  • Always, ALWAYS start with OPEN STRINGS! I know, it sounds too beginner style, but it’s not. They are so important for the sound and your posture. If you play open strings, and you are aware of your body, maintaining a relaxed and correct posture the whole time, you will start to see improvement in your sound, it will be smoother, clearer, and beautiful!

Here is an exercise that I love to do with my students:

  • Play simple left-hand exercises. You don’t need to dive in too fast, start slowly with things that can help your articulation. We have an exercise which we call ‘columns’, it means you play combinations of fingerings while trying to articulate your fingers very well. Here is an example you can do:

  • Play a scale, it is very important to play scales before starting to play pieces. If you listen to your intonation and correct it when it’s needed, your violin skills will level up so much! Here is the G major scale in two octaves:

In the end, the most important thing is: don’t be harsh with yourself, give yourself time, and be patient! Things will level up really quickly!
