Did you ever feel like this? -> funny reel

You had a lot to do lately. The violin sits still in its corner of the room, and you feel guilty. After a while, you finally decide to play something for the sake of the ‘old times’. But, holy moly, it feels like you are playing for the first time! And it’s been just a few days since you practiced! You ask yourself, “What should I do?”

Don’t Feel Guilty: Everyone Goes Through This

The answer is simple. You should not feel guilty or bad. This happens to everybody, even the biggest violin players! When our students come back from vacation or have just had a busy week, we recommend these easy violin practice exercises:

Start with Open Strings

Always, ALWAYS start with OPEN STRINGS! I know, it sounds too beginner-style, but it’s not. Open strings are crucial for your sound and posture. When you play open strings, focus on your body. Maintain a relaxed and correct posture the entire time. You will start to see improvement in your sound. It will become smoother, clearer, and more beautiful!

Here is an exercise that I love to do with my students:

Simple Left-Hand Exercises

Next, play simple left-hand exercises. You don’t need to dive in too fast. Start slowly with things that can help your articulation. We have an exercise called ‘columns’. In this exercise, you play combinations of fingerings while focusing on articulating your fingers well. Here is an example you can try:

The Importance of Scales

Finally, play a scale. It is vital to play scales before starting to play pieces. If you listen to your intonation and correct it when needed, your violin skills will improve significantly! Here is the G major scale in two octaves:

Be Patient with Yourself

In the end, the most important thing is this: don’t be harsh on yourself. Give yourself time and be patient! Things will improve quickly.
