The Impact of Music on Neuroplasticity: How can I keep my brain young

Updated: Sep 22

Last week I told you that I finished reading a book about neuroplasticity and one of the chapters from this book was about music and how it can increase the longevity of your brain, so I want to share with you some information I learned!

Scientists explain that the practice of playing an instrument favors, by associating motor actions with specific sounds and visual patterns, the improvement of connectivity between different regions of the brain and the formation of new neuronal networks.

If you've ever wanted to learn to play a musical instrument, consider increasing brain plasticity as a reason to start.

In the case of people who learn and practice the violin, the presence of changes in the neuronal networks have an important role in the development of motor skills, as well as in the processing of auditory stimulus.

There were discovered denser brain connections and larger regions in certain areas of the brain of people who started to learn a musical instrument. These transformations are tangible evidence of how musical practice can reshape the structure of the brain.

Here are some benefits of music to your brain:

  • Listening to and practicing music stimulates the brain, improving cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and problem-solving skills.

  • Learning a musical instrument improves hand-eye coordination while developing fine motor skills.

  • Music is used in neurological therapy to help recover movement and motor skills in patients who have suffered strokes or other brain injuries.

  • Studying vocal art or a musical instrument can improve language skills, including vocabulary and the ability to understand and speake a language.

  • Listening to music can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, this contributing to a state of well-being - emotional and mental!

  • Practicing music stimulates creative thinking, encouraging the brain to make new connections.

So, yes! Music is a real magical thing ✨. Even Albert Einstein played the violin, this activity helped him to keep his mind organized, clear and lucid over the years, and offering him the chance of creating new neuronal networks who played and important role in his scientific discoveries!
